Not bad for a forced induction engine that hasn't been rebuilt yet. So far, in the last 2 years I've managed to put 9k miles on it, not terrible, but not ideal. How many miles do you have on your DD, and what is it?

Grimace is the second one from the left (Red Liftback).
It's not in as good of shape as you'd think, old seals + 12+ years sitting outside in the Seattle weather didn't treat the trunk area very well. Hence my new acquisition, Aces.

Really depends on what the previous owners did to it. They will pretty much need a cooling system overhaul, and probably new O2 sensors and possibly new cats. The valve cover gaskets and timing chain tensioner seal will also probably need to be changed. Other than that, not much.

Aces must have crazy power, that's a lot of decal mods ;)
I've only ever seen a Celica of that model year once before in person though, and it was owned by the guy who sold me my MR2. Very unique cars, I like your collection.
Worn out seals are the bane of my existence. Engine seals are more serious, but even weather stripping can suck after a while.

Those are all from the PO. I think he makes stickers on the side, and you might as well put your practice pieces on something!
I have 3 of them right now. 1979 Supra parts car, and the two 1981's.
The motor seals were dealt with by purchasing a very nice rebuilt 20/22R Hybrid. It's the weather seals that failed me on Grimace.

Oddly enough the E46 has been pretty reliable for highway duties. Smooth and quiet ride, excellent audio system, and I'm getting an average of about 26-27 mpg. The Cherokee was lucky to break 22mpg if I kept my foot out of it (I could not). If you can afford a car payment, look at a Fiesta or something similar that gets good highway mileage. If not, there's no shame in driving a Civic.

Yeah there are not a lot of nice examples left. Also very few people who enjoy the E36. Anyway... I'm in the long, slow process of replacing both front struts as one is on the verge of failure, ignition tumbler doesn't work so that's wired up to toggle switches, there's a slight fuel leak on the top seal of one injector, already tried to fix it once and trying again next month. The all-too-common lifter tick, which goes away if I keep it brimming with oil. Weird electrical problem, some sort of phantom power draw means I have to jump it almost once per day unless I charge it overnight. That's been the most frustrating problem. Passenger window doesn't roll down. Someday I'll buy a new regulator motor for it and spend a weekend fixing it. A few minor cosmetic issues that can be fixed. That's about it. Other than that, superb little car.

I've been seriously considering the Fiesta. It's not a "cool" car, but it'll probably double my MPG compared to the MR2 and I can get one manual equipped. Really my only qualms with them are that they are FWD, and really aren't something I'd want to keep very long.
I'm ok with buying either used or new, but for a new car to really be worth it to me, I want it to be something I'm content with long term. I need to get my ass up and moving and go and test drive one.

I think I'm the only fortwo owner on Oppo right now! Everyone else has driven one, owned a previous generation model, or tools around in one of the awful Car2Go models.
The transmission is a mixed bag. There are things to love about it, and there are things to not like. I learned to drive Manual in a Saturn, so the smart's shifting isn't something that bothers me.
The only thing I don't like about the transmission is the newest version of Automatic Mode. When the U.S. versions of the car were first released, the transmissions were programmed for maximum fuel economy. This meant that unless you put the pedal down far, it would stay in whatever gear it was in.
Of course, after receiving bad review after bad review (about how slow the car is), the heads at smart USA decided to have the transmissions reprogrammed to provide maximum power when necessary. So all older cars got a free "update" and all new cars came from the factory with the update already installed.
The effect is very annoying. It'll downshift for just about everything including minor bumps in the road.
So I drive mine 100% in Manual Mode. Not only is it more fun, but it also allows me to have full control over the gear switching and pretty respectable fuel economy (my highest was 53 mpg)

Yeah, that's one decent reason. I like them because they're easier to find in manual than an E46, still very comfortable and not too heavy to go fast without using up all your gas. Plus I like understated bodies.

Usually if I don't mess around and stick to the speed limit I will see closer to 27mpg. The 3.0L is quite an efficient engine.

Precisely. A manual E46 in good condition will cost you a ridiculous amount of money. Same with an E30 now. A manual E36 can be had for a good price still, and it's still pretty easy to maintain and repair and supercharge, if you must have all the power.
